PhD student in medical ethics 100% for a 3-year project (SNSF)

The Palliative and Supportive Care Service within the Department of Medicine at Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) is looking for a PhD Student at 100%, as of 1 March 2023, for a 3-year 100% position as PhD student in a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

The selected candidate will participate in a research project that aims to explore the concept of patients' altruism at the end of life from an interdisciplinary perspective (« Understanding altruism at the end of life », 2023-2026). Our approach challenges the traditional perception of terminally ill patients as passive recipients of care. Based on previous research, we postulate that most end-of-life patients exhibit an altruistic motivation and wish to be perceived as autonomous and active agents who can care for others. The project is composed of six sub-projects, two of which focus on the ethics perspective:

Subproject 2a (investigator: Ralf J. Jox, professor of geriatric palliative care and medical ethics): A qualitative and conceptual study will explore and define the role that altruism may play in shaping patients' decisions during Advance Care Planning encounter.

Subproject 2b (investigator: Claudia Gamondi, physician and palliative care researcher): A qualitative study will explore and define the role that altruism may play in shaping patients' and family members' decisions to pursue and provide help when asking for assisted suicide.
