Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) is one of the five university hospitals in Switzerland. Thanks to its collaboration with the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University of Lausanne and the EPFL, the CHUV plays a leading role in the fields of medical care, medical research and education.

The Institute of Humanities in Medicine (IHM), attached to the Department of Education and Research of the CHUV and to the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University of Lausanne, invites applications for a post-doctoral position in ethics and philosophy of medicine, attached to the professor of medical ethics Ralf J.  Jox. The IHM brings together four academic areas: history of medicine and public health; social sciences of medicine; philosophy, ethics and law of medicine and health; and applied human and social sciences (hospital communication, spirituality in medicine).

Main tasks of the position:

  • Develop an academic line of research in ethics and/or philosophy of medicine consistent with the academic profile of the IHM and its philosophy, ethics and law of medicine axis
  • Secure external funding to support research in ethics and/or philosophy of medicine
  • Participate in pre-graduate, post-graduate and continuing education in medical ethics
  • Support the supervision of young researchers, doctoral students and master students
  • Coordinate activities within the philosophy, ethics and law of medicine axis in conjunction with the other academic axes of the IHM
  • Contribute to the scientific and public promotion of research, notably through publications, presentations, committees or media
  • Collaborate with other members of the institute and participate in the Institute's events and common activities.

Profile required:

  • University education and advanced degree in philosophy or ethics
  • Doctorate in medical ethics/bioethics, applied ethics, or philosophy of medicine
  • Professional training and/or work experience in the health care field preferred
  • Experience in conducting scientific research projects
  • Previous teaching experience, teaching ability and motivation for teaching
  • Excellent performance demonstrated, e.g., by grades, scholarships, awards, or evaluations
  • Academic career plan with the intention of obtaining an academic qualification
  • Communication and relationship skills, ability and willingness to promote interdisciplinary collaboration; openness and flexibility
  • Excellent command of English (C1) and French (B2); good knowledge of German is a plus.
